Moving to COSMOS3

 

COSMOS3 incorporates a number of significant changes of which you need to be aware:

 

·      Programs: There are new programs as well as new functionality in some existing programs. Some no longer relevant programs have been removed.

·      File changes: Some files have new formats or added data

o   Fits image files (e.g. ccd0001_b, ift2005_flat, etc) and bad pixel files are unchanged

o   Observation definition files contain additional parameters. If an old obsdef file is opened with defineobs, most of the additional information will be added automatically.

o   Map files have additional information, which is used by adjust-map, and whatsthat, but old files will still work with adjust-map

o   Program parameter files are in an entirely new format and have new names (program.json instead of program.par)

o   Many system files are in new locations.

o   Improved distortion maps

o   Improved chip positions in dewdef files

·      IRAF: IRAF is no longer needed to view images

·      Installation: COSMOS3 is distributed in two forms- as an almost-complete binary package for Mac OS X, and as a Virtual Box virtual machine. Both should be much easier to install than the old source package.
